PortraitAbout Elizabeth Black

Elizabeth Black worked for many years as a river guide in the Grand Canyon and on other western rivers. She first painted watercolors on a raft trip down the Canyon in 1975. When the boat carrying her sketches flipped, all her paintings got soaked, and about half were improved immensely by their swim. That incident gave her a tiny glimpse of the exciting potential ahead.

She and her husband, landscape photographer Christopher Brown, are still exploring the West together, by boat and on foot, carrying their art-making equipment to the most scenic spots they can find. She frequently paints on-location in the heart of the scene, to gather source material and understand her subject better. She produces her large finished works in the controlled environment of her studio.

Elizabeth has won numerous awards for her paintings (Grand Canyon Celebration of Art Best-of-Show, Colorado Art Open, the Loveland Museum Biennial) and her work is in many private and public collections ( Rocky Mountain National Park , the Community Foundation, and the Grants Pass Museum of Art). Her work is exhibited in numerous locations throughout the Rocky Mountain States .

Artist's Statement
“I paint realistic western landscapes of the places I know best, where I have spent long days gazing at the wilderness. I love depicting beauty. For many years, my paintings have been about the wonder of unforgettable scenes in deep canyons, high mountains, or the secrets of flowing water.

The Grand Canyon is of special interest to me; it is my spirit guide.  It has taught me to paint and to row big water in its depths.  It introduced me to my husband and many life-long friends.  Over the years, the Canyon has revealed great beauty, and showed me how to endure and to see.  It has taught me how to live lightly on the earth and how to hold up half the sky.  The Canyon has given me many gifts.  In my painting, I try to pass some of them on to you ”
